Because of the non existent TC I can not in good conscience wholeheartedly recommend this mod if you are a TC vaper. If you just vape in straight wattage mode this is a great little stealth mod to have. If Smok does do an update I will update this review but as of now this is strictly a wattage mod. If you are a fan of the original Alien and want the same form factor but in a smaller package then this is a mod for you.
How Does It Vape?
It vapes great in power mode but it is really disappointing in TC mode. Let’s hope Smok fixes this with an update because this is a beauty of a mod and it definitely deserves better TC than the one currently on this chipset. Very surprising as well because its big brother is known to do a decent job with TC.
Right now I have the baby Tank on top of the mod with the .4 ohm coil at 50 watts in power mode and the vape is just fantastic. I get nice, thick, flavorful clouds. Battery life has been what I expected out of a single 18650 mod. This is by no means an all day mod. If this is your only mod I would suggest at least three sets of batteries to get you through a day.
First Impression Out of the Box
This is a cute, tiny, little, mod. Looks like it comes with everything you need to start vaping. Add juice and batteries and you are good to go. Stealthy looking little fella that looks like it has a nice finish. Comfortable to hold and it has Smok’s famous firing bar. The paint does have a little chip on the side of the firing bar. Not a big deal but it has to be mentioned.
What’s in the Box
The Baby Alien kit includes the Baby Alien Mod, TFV8 Baby Tank, .4 ohm coil, .6 ohm coil, charger/update cable, spare parts bag, and a user manual. The kit is very nicely packaged however I do not see a spare glass for the tank or an RBA deck, that’s a con for sure.
From Top to Bottom
At the top of the mod you have a solid, quality, 510 connection that is typical for Smok and what we as vapers have come to expect from them. While this mod is made to ideally fit a 22mm atomizer a 25mm tank will have a slight overhang on the front but a 24mm will have no overhang at all. On the other side of the top of the mod you have your battery cap. This mod takes one 18650 battery. Take the cap sign off and it has a big red + sign on the bottom of the battery cavity. The cap itself could have thicker threading and the threads do seem to be a little crunchy at first but after a few battery changes they seem to smooth out a little. There is no venting on the battery cap. The mod looks very much like an Eleaf Pico with an Alien screen.
The screen is laid out exactly like a mini Alien screen. The screen displays your wattage, mode, temperature, battery life, voltage, ohms, amps, board temperature, puffs, and puff duration. Everything a conscientious vaper needs to know. The screen itself is bright and clear but the fonts are very small just like the baby’s big brother. Below the screen you have the plus/minus buttons that can be used to navigate the menu system as well as adjusting your temperature and wattage.
On the opposite side of the mod is a carbon fiber sticker with some Smok and AL85 branding. The bottom of the mod surprisingly has no battery venting. Smok’s trademark firing bar is of course present on this mod. It is the same color as the mod itself. It feels solid with no rattle at all. It gives a solid click when fired anywhere on the bar from about halfway up. Right below the firing bar is the charge/update port.
Look, Feel, and General Aesthetics
I love the look and feel of this mod. It just feels great in your hand from the first touch. It’s exactly like a mini Alien mod. The paint seems to be durable but time will tell. Overall though I think it’s a fantastic looking mod. It’s great for the vaper who wants a small, stealthy setup with 80 watts of power. If you liked the look of the original Alien then you are going to love the look and feel of this little mod.
The Baby Alien has the very popular Alien chipset in it. In power mode it vapes great, TC is another story. I am really disappointed in the TC vape this mod provides. It is weak, inconsistent and all over the place. I really do hope Smok fixes this with an update as they are known as a company that does frequent updates. Right now, sadly the TC is just not up to par and unfortunately, I can only review what they put in front of me and not what a possible future update may bring. This did surprise me because while Smok is really not known for its “TC” board it has always been decent. That is not the case with the Baby Alien. It’s a shame because in Power mode this mod is a little beast.
The Menu System
The AL 85 menu system will be very familiar to you if you own a Smok mod.
- 5 clicks turns it on
- Once it is on, 5 clicks locks it, 5 clicks unlocks it
- 3 Clicks gets you into the menu system
- In the menu system a long click makes your selection or you can use the +/- buttons
- Menu settings include Mode, Puffs, Settings, and Power
Once in the mode setting you can select the type of wire you want, the wattage, and the TCR. The puffs setting allows you to keep track of the puffs you take and even set a limit for yourself. The settings mode lets you adjust the screen time, screen lock, contrast, and adjust your ohms if need be. The Power setting lets the vaper shut the mod off.
In my opinion the included TFV8 Baby tank absolutely makes this kit. The TFV8 Baby is a tried and true sub ohm tank that deserves every bit of popularity it has attained. It has a nice sized, wide bore, delrin drip tip paired with smok’s famous hinged, locking top fill system. The o’rings that hold the glass in place are nice and beefy and should guard well against any leaks. The chimney section screws directly into the coil head to provide awesome vapor and flavor. The airflow is massive and smooth. This is a direct lung hit tank. No MTL here folks. Even if you cut the airflow down to a sliver you will get a restricted lung hit.
The Baby tank measures up at 22mm by 53mm with a 3ml capacity. The two coils that come with the tank are the .6 ohm coil and the .4 ohm coil. The .6 ohm coil can be vaped up to 50 watts but is best between 30 – 40 watts. The .4 ohm coil can be vaped up to 80 watts but is best between 55 – 65 watts. Really disappointed that the kit did not include an RBA base and a spare glass. In this day and age that should be a given and not a separate purchase.
