Smok A-Priv Review

Updated on: 2019-12-17

What’s up, Insiders? DeucesJack, I’m at Today, I got another Smok product for you. That’s right, for all you geniuses that always hit me up in the comments, it’s smoke, not smock.

The name of the company is SmokTech, not SmockTech. So don’t even hit me up in the comments because I’m sick of hearing it already. I’ve spoken the reps from Smok, every one of them has told me it’s pronounced smoke. So all you people that are about to write me and go, “You didn’t say your word right.” just keep quiet. It’s Smok. Trust me on that one, I’ve checked into it. But anyway, I got off on a little rant there. We’re going to be going over the Smok A-Priv. I got this thing on sale for like 17 bucks. I saw it. I thought it looked kind of cool, had that kind of alien look.

Before we get into the video, couple of days ago, we hit 25,000 stuff. We’re giving you a huge giveaway. We’re going to have five separate prizes and there’s going to be eight winners in total. So make sure you go over to our Facebook group and you join up over there because the giveaway is going to be over there.

From Top to Bottom

Look at that. Is that a beauty or what? I’m kind of diggin that. Kind of has that alien look to it with the red. Really nice paint job. Kind of cool. Lots of texture, lots of cuts and texture. I don’t know what Smok is thinking. I don’t like this micro USB port towards the top of the mod here. It’s not that bad because there’s a little bit of ledge here. So if you have a leaky tank or you’re a sloppy dripper, it’ll probably drip this way, it won’t go over the ledge. But I just think that’s too close to the atomizer especially with all this real estate.

Now you can see, in these little holes here, you have like plastic, you have LED lights in there and I’m going to show them to you in a second. But I just wanted to point that out. There’s your firing bar, nice and clicky. You can fire it almost three-quarters down. You can fire it and it’ll still fire but it gets harder from the middle up is easier to fire. Just a nice shape to it.

There’s your plus and minus buttons right there. I kind of like this ribbing because it gives it a nice grip. Really, really nice job on that and the paint job on it, the paint job is absolutely gorgeous. Smok really outdid themselves on the paint job. A little bit of Smok branding over there.

Size Comparison

Let’s do a quick size comparison. I did want to put it next to the Smoke D Barrel. By the way, Smok D Barrel, one of my all-time favorite Smok mods. It’s fantastic. You can get them online for under 20 bucks, like a twenty buck chuck. And it’s very similar to it. It’s almost like a D Barrel with lights. It’s very, very similar, although the D Barrel does feel much more comfortable in the hand, but the same chipset, same screen, same everything. Instead of a fire bar, you got a trigger over here which makes it a lot more comfortable. But very, very similar, really, really nice job on both these mods, Smok. If you compare it to something like the Vaporesso Gen which is also a very popular mod. Look how much smaller it is than the Gen. These are both dual 18650 mods and the size difference is kind of big there.

It’s got a lot smaller footprint. The Smok doesn’t perform like the Gen. The Gen has a much better chipset but I wanted to use it in the comparison because a lot of people have this mod.

Screen & Menu System

On the top side, you can see, two star screws holding everything in place. This is your screen right here. Gold-plated 510 that I would say has a short throw with a stiff spring to it. Stainless steel plate, here stainless steel threading around. Just a really nice looking mod. I can’t complain about the looks of this thing. It’s a good looking mod. There’s your battery door right there, some A-Priv branding. Got a little texture here. You can get your fingernail in there. It is a spring-loaded battery door. I’m definitely diggin that. Smok, you guys got to get with the program, though. We do have gold-plated battery contacts here but we have black-on-black battery markings. That’s not good. Don’t like it, it’s a con. Down the tubes, though, things get a little clearer. I don’t know if you can see it on camera but there are positive and negative battery markings down the tubes. You can see, you have this nice, little latch right there. It does feel plastic, the latch. So longevity-wise, not sure how long that might last. It may be an issue, it may not.

Negative side facing up over here, positive side facing up over there. Push it close, pull your latch back, and you can see, it lights up all kinds of colors. Kind of cool. Typical Smok mod. Five clicks, there’s just Smok splash screen, A-Priv firmware version, and there is your screen. There’s your wattage, your preheat, your separate battery meters, your resistance, your voltage and your puff counter in seconds. Typical smoke menu. Four clicks put you into the mode button. If you click the fire button, you can scroll through the menu system. If you find a part of the menu that you landed on that you want to go into, hold the fire button. Now you can choose between wattage mode Ti, temperature control Ti, temperature control Ni, stainless steel, and back to wattage mode. Let me put it in stainless steel for you. If you hard press, now you can choose your wattage right here, up or down. You can see it scrolls in one watt increments, all the way up to 225W. It does not round-robin. Once you’ve picked the wattage that you like, hard press, now you can adjust your TCR if you want to. Hard press, and that’s it. Now on this screen, in temperature control mode, you can adjust your temperature in 10 degree increments. Want to go back to wattage, hard press, scroll back to wattage. Hard press, there you can pick your pre-heat, hard, soft or normal. I normally keep it in normal. Hard press, and you’re back to your regular screen. Four clicks, now you can scroll through your puff information. Here’s where you can set your lights. Hard press, you can go from rainbow, red, green, blue, yellow, magenta, cyan, white, RGB, which means bunch of colors, and back to rainbow. If I am rocking lights, I’m normally rocking them, as the Rainbow Warrior, I keep it in rainbow because I like to see all them colors. Back to the main menu screen, the last setting is power. Hard press, here is where you can pick to turn it on or off. We will keep it on. Hard press, and you’re back to the main menu. I like this feature on this that I’m going to show you in a second. See these buttons here? Sometimes they get in the way and you accidentally adjust the wattage in order to combat that, hit the plus and minus button together and you lock them. So now you can’t adjust the wattage but you can still fire the mod. In order to unlock them, hit them again and they’re unlocked. A few shortcuts as well, if you hit the plus and fire bar together, you brings you right into your preheat where you can pick your preheat. If you hit the minus and fire button together, it brings you right to your mode where you can adjust between wattage and TC.

And that’s it, folks. That’s the whole menu system. Not a lot to see here. Typical Smok menu system which is a good thing because their menu systems tend to be very intuitive. One last look at it. Let’s cut back on top.

You guys saw my D Barrel review. I love that mod. I think it’s one of the best mod Smok ever produced and this has got the same exact chipset, a little bit of a different form factor, and some lights. But it’s a nice mod. It also has the same cons that the D Barrel has because it’s basically the same mod with a different skin.

So the first con is going to be that charge port location. I don’t like it. I think it’s too close to the atomizer. You have a leaky atomizer. You could have a problem. It’s a con.

Button location, again, not crazy about it because when your vape on it, especially with a firing bar, sometimes your finger wraps around it and you hit those buttons on accident. I wish they would have put those buttons on the side here, somewhere right over here. I would have liked to seen a different location for the buttons.

Again, like the D Barrel, TC is not the greatest.

And you guys know, I’m definitely not a lights guy. I don’t want to be Saturday Night Fever in it down the block at night in New York City. Thank God the lights are programmable and you can turn them off but I’m not a fan of lights, so I’m going to give the lights a con. But I know some people love light so I’m probably going to put it in the pros as well. In other words, it’s a subjective con.

But that’s it on the cons. Let’s move on to the pros cuz we got a lot to talk about.

First pro is going to be, 26mm fit on top, no problem, no overhang.

It’s comfortable.

Solid battery door.

It’s got a nice screen.

Clicky fire bar.

Easy, super intuitive menu system.

It’s pretty small for a dual 186500 mod.

It’s under 20 bucks. I think I’d pick this thing up for $17 delivered. That’s a screaming deal.

It’s got a nice paint job.

Lots of texture on this one so you can get a good grip on it.

It’s got lights. If you like lights, this has got them. You can change the colors on them, you can make them fade, you can make them flash. You want to go into John Travolta mode, it’s even got a music beat feature where the lights will move to the beat of the music. So if you like lights, it’s got lights.

So that’s it, Insiders! Those are my cons and pros. Let’s chat about this one a little bit.

Like I said earlier in the video, it’s basically a D Barrel with a different skin and lights. It’s the same exact chipset, it’s going to perform the same exact way. I’ve been enjoying the performance of it. Check it out. I got the Aromamizer Light on it right now, 62W, fires fast, no issues at all. It has nothing to do with the flavor because the atomizer I have on there has to do with the flavor but it does what it’s supposed to do. It’s at 62W, it fires fast and it vapes well. I know people are going to ask me, “But Deuces, if I had to buy one which one would you buy? Would you buy this one or the D Barrel?” Honestly, I got to tell you, I like the D Barrel better. I like the looks better of it, I like the way it feels in my hand better. It’s a little bit more comfortable than this one but it performs exactly the same as the D Barrel. So it basically comes down to aesthetics for the individual. Whichever one you like, go buy it.

It’s got lights. You can turn them on, off, or to the beat of whatever music you are listening to. Protections include short-circuit, overheat, ten-second, low voltage, low resistance. It’s available in a ton of different colors.
