Cool Vapor Cavalry RDTA Review

Updated on: 2018-07-04

General Thoughts

All right everyone. We’re back on top. And you just saw the Cool Vapor Cavalry RDTA and it’s squonk-able. Let’s talk about that for a second because I got to be honest. I’m not happy with the way they did the squonk-able part of this RDA. You saw up close they put like a dedicated deck section in there. But the problem is, you know it basically renders the tank useless because I have tried squonking on it. And when you squonk with it, it’s not like the excess juice actually rolls into the tank or anything. They should have maybe drilled some holes in or something so the juice could drip down if you over squonk or something like that. I don’t know. They should have done something. Maybe some type of stepped up design in there. So, once the juice hits the bottom it kind of drip s back down into the tank. But it’s just, I don’t know, it seems like you only have two choices. Like you can run it as a straight up squonker and just use the top part of the deck. Or you can forget about the squonking and just use it as an RDTA. I personally think it shines as an RDTA and not really as a squonker. I don’t think it’s a really good squonker in my opinion.

This thing is 24.5mm in diameter. It does come in black and stainless steel. I would consider it like a hybrid RDTA squonk RDA. I don’t know any other way to classify it. Not crazy about all the branding on it. I just never like tons of branding on something and this one has branding all over it. I wish Cool Vapor would have calmed down on that a bit.

Let’s get into it. Let’s get into the cons and pros right now.

First Impression Out of the Box

DeucesJack:What’s up everybody. DeucesJack at vapinginsider.com. Today I got an RTDA for you, been a while, right? RTDA seem to have fallen a bit out of favor since squonking has gotten big. But guess what? This one is a squonk-able RDTA. I’m not too sure about the design yet but let me dive down. Let me show it up close and personal. Then we’ll come back on top. We’ll talk about it, cons, pros, we’re out of here. See you downlow.

What’s in the Box

  • 1 x atomizer
  • 5 x orings
  • 1 x screw
  • 1 x allen key
  • 1 x glass tube
  • 1 x user manual

All right everyone. Welcome to the downlow portion of this video. Today we’re going to be doing the Cool Vapor Cavalry RTDA. Not a lot of RTDA is coming out lately. I think that hype train has kind of passed. This is a new one.

Cool Vapor Calvary RDTA Review box

Let’s check it out what we have. You get one atomizer, clapton wire, hexagon wrench, spare bag, glass tank. A little bit of Cool Vapor branding over here.

Let’s open this up and see what we got. First thing first we got an RDTA card right here. Basically little instruction booklet. Take a quick little look at the RDTA. We’ll come back to that in a second.

Cool Vapor Calvary RDTA Review contents

Let’s see what we have in the rest of the box. Nice looking coils Ni80 0.36 ohms. I think we’re going to use those. Little spare parts bag here. Spare hex screws, spare o-rings, gold-plated. We also have a spare glass. Nice job on that. Over here, we have an Allen key.

From Top to Bottom

Let’s check out the RDTA up close and personal. Here we have a little bit of Cool Vapor branding. Airflow slots over here. More Cool Vapor branding. You can see some glass over here, let you know what your juice level is doing. Here is your top cap. There are your cyclops style airflow slots held in place by an o-ring with a nice tolerance to it.

Cool Vapor Calvary RDTA Review tip

One thing I really don’t like about this RDTA, it’s got this proprietary drip tip thing going on. Let me show it to you. It actually screws out of the metal sleeve. It’s all one piece. I do not like that. Basically you crack or lose this piece you’re screwed. And I don’t like threading plastic onto metal. That’s always a no-no. It’s kind of nice that you can take it apart for cleaning but very easy to cross thread and screw up your whole atomizer especially since it’s a proprietary drip tip and you have no choice but to run this. They didn’t even give you a spare. I do not like that.

Cool Vapor Calvary RDTA Review parts

Here is the barrel section done a little differently. Let me show it to you. See this little notches right here, they fit right into there and they don’t allow the barrel to spin. I do like that. It does seem to be machined very nicely.

Here’s the bottom part. Now, it says some Cool Vapor branding over here, Cavalry. I have number 21. This does look like a squonking pin and if you blow on it, you get air all the way through it. But if you are going to use it as a squonking pin, it’s not going to squonk into the tank part of the RDA. Where it will squonk is up here. This is where the juice will come out. And I guess it’ll hit those juice wells and the excess will drip down into the tank. I just don’t like that design. I would’ve rather it been if you’re going to use it as a squonker, that there be holds on that top pipe and the tank gets to fill up. I don’t like that at all. I don’t know who came up with that or whose idea that was, but I don’t like it. I really don’t. I’d rather just fill it right here at the fill port and use it as a regular RDTA. That’s the way I’ve been using it.

Now, on the deck. We have two gold-plated beefy hex screws. They did a nice job on that. We have two posts. One terminal per post. Again, not a fan of that design at all. Here are your wicking slots right here. They are a little bit on the small side. I would have liked them to be a little bigger. But the deck itself is machined really well.

Building

Let’s slap a build in it and let me show you how this thing works. On the deck like this, I do like to precut my leads. What i normally do is I put them where I think I want them. I just keep the holes open and I cut. And then I do the same thing on this side. I try to eyeball it. Get it close at least and boom. And now I hang it next to the other coils and I try to just cut it just as even as the ones that I just did. And I eyeball the next one. We can clean it up later if we have to.

So now my leads are precut. They should be a little bit easier to put in. I simply slide them in like so. Same thing on this side. And I kind of try to keep them. Keep them held together like that. I take my driver, tighten them down, same thing on thing on this side. Take my driver, tighten them down. And don’t worry about coil placement. We’re going to fix that. You just basically take your coiling rod, get them in there and bend them where you want them to be. Same thing on this side, get your coiling rod in there and jostle them around a little bit. That looks just about perfect.

Now we’re ready to pulse it and wicked. Shout out to the Coil Master 521 Plus tab. Love this machine here. We’re ohming out at around 0.1 but that should come up in a little bit. Let’s give it a nice gentle pulse. Heating from the inside out and evenly. Beautiful blue color, love that about Ni80.

Wicking

Let’s wick it out. Let me show you how to wick this thing. Of course, as usual we’re going to be using Native Wicks Platinum Blend. You guys know that’s the way I roll. That’s the wicking material that I like. Get one end nive and pointy. Put it right through. See how nice and tight that is. There we go. Now when you cut this, you want to cut it so it hangs just below the metal piece right there on the RDTA. So cut it right there. Now we’re going to do the same thing on the other side. Here that? Nice and tight. Same thing when you cut the wicks. Get it right below there. Same thing on this side. You want it right below the metal part. See it? And same thing on this side. Right below the metal part.

And now, all you do is you take your wicking tool and you tuck your wicks in nice and loosely. Make sure they’re not tight. You don’t want them choking off that cotton and choking off that capillary action. You want them nice and loose. There’s got to be some space in there. Same thing over here, and the same thing over here.

And that’s it!. Now, you’re ready to juice it up. We’re going to be using some Maui Waui, strawberry, pineapple and mango by Smoozie. This stuff is fantastic. You’re going to love it. Great summertime vape.

First thing I like to do is I like to fill it up from here. You’ll see. All filled up. Now what I like to do is I like to wet my wicks a little bit on top here. Maybe give it a little pulse right now. Get that juice working. Sew how we have vapor and just give it a little, another paint job. Wow. That stuff smell fantastic.

All right, let’s put everything back together. Let’s cut back on top. Vape on it. Cons, pros, we’re out of here. See you back on top.

Not crazy about all the branding on it. I just never like tons of branding on something and this one has branding all over it. I wish Cool Vapor would have calmed down on that a bit.

Let’s get into it. Let’s get into the cons and pros right now.

Cons

First one I’m going to tell you, like I said, it’s not a great squonking RDTA. There are better ones on the market.

I’m also going to give them a con on those tight wick ports. I think they should have drilled them out a little more and made them a little bigger.

Definitely getting a huge con on this ridiculous proprietary drip tip. Don’t like it at all. Cool Vapor, I don’t know if you’re relatively new to this field. But you want to know something? Nobody wants proprietary drip tips. 810 or 510 only. Make sure you stick to that on your next atomizer.

And the other thing I said already, too much branding. I hate when they put branding all over the top cap and everything like that.

And the other con I’m going to give them is that deck design. Two posts one terminal per post. I hate that type of deck. It’s a pain in the neck to build on.

Pros

Let’s get into the pros cause there’s few of them. First pro is going to be locking barrel. Love that. They’re going to get a pro on that.

Give them a pro for that nice fill port easy fill with a needle nosed bottle. Pro fo that.

Thing’s got smooth airflow. I’m going to give them a pro on that.

I think the coils in the center that are included are fantastic they did a great job on that. They’ll get a pro for that.

I love those big beefy deck screws. Awesome job Cool Vapor. Pro on that. O-ring tolerance on this, they did that right. This thing has great o-ring tolerance. I like that.

3ml capacity for an RDTA. That’s a nice capacity pro on that.

I’ll give them a pro because it’s always kind of in squonk mode right because that there’s no way to plug up that 510 on the bottom. But I’ll be honest with you. I’ve never had any juice like leak into it when I’m not using it as a squonker. That’s a nice design. I’ll give them a pro for that. It’s innovative.

And I’m also going to give them a pro because it has really nice flavor and the cloud production is nice as well so they’ll get a pro on that.
